Human Capital

Our people play a critical role in our success. Their skills, diligence and commitment are essential to achieve the manufacturing excellence required to meet our customers’ quality standards and to ensure cost-efficient production.
  • As a company, we ensure that our workplace environment is safe, that we provide the facilities to help support our employees’ health and wellness, and that we promote gender equality.
  • Our human capital policies and practices aim to ensure that we attract, develop and retain the skills we need to execute our strategy, while building the skills and experience of the next generation of leaders and experts.
  • Human capital is managed at an operational level by our human resources function. Transformation is a key HR consideration, and is monitored by the employment equity and transformation committees who then report to the board.

Health and Safety

The machines and certain materials at Metair’s manufacturing facilities can be potentially dangerous if safety policies and practices are not in place and adhered to. The most common workplace injuries in the group operations include cuts, bruises, back and muscle strains and burns.
The Metair group safety, health and environmental (SHE) policy sets guiding principles that are implemented at the subsidiaries through detailed policies that align their specific situation with the group policy.
  • Our health and safety policies align with the relevant legal frameworks, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), No. 85 of 1993. A health and safety template has been designed based on the ISO 45001 framework to assist subsidiaries with compliance, continuous improvement and best practices. Eleven of our operations are accredited in terms of OHSAS 18001 or ISO 45001.
  • It’s not only about managing our impact on the communities around us responsibly, but also about actively contributing to their socio-economic development through various corporate social investment initiatives.
  • Most of the projects we’re involved in focus on addressing pressing health issues, skills development and improving facilities and tuition at schools. Group socio-economic projects are carefully chosen to ensure that they have a significant impact on as many people as possible and have a high chance of being sustainable.
