Smiths Plastics (Pty) Ltd
Smiths Plastics & Automold
Smiths Plastics’ core business is the manufacture of injection-moulded components and it has the facilities and the skills to produce components from specialised engineering polymers. Further to this, the company has specialised downstream processes, such as plating on plastics (POP), assembly, single coat and colour match painting, and a number of advanced-technology plastics welding facilities. This level of vertical integration creates high degree of manufacturing flexibility that offers customers a single source for complex cosmetic plastic components and assemblies.
In line with its growth strategy Smiths Plastics broke away from Smiths Manufacturing, in 2004, and became an autonomous Metair subsidiary.
The acquisitions of Automould, Ariston and SPE Plastics injection moulding companies increased the national coverage of Smiths Plastics to include the EasternCape, bringing location and cost benefits to its customers. At present the Eastern Cape operations are conducted under the Automould business name.
The skills available to produce advanced technology plastic injection-moulded components are limited within South Africa. Smiths Plastics has created a strong management and technical team to support the customer specific requirements of the automotive industry thus giving the organisationa competitive advantage. This advantaged is further enhanced by a culture of transformation, continuous learning and skills development.Significant advances have been made in apprentice training and technical skills development in order to sustain the pool of technical skills within the company.
Smiths Plastics has been built on a philosophy of just-in-time manufacturing and delivery to support specific OEM customers’ needs. This has the advantage of low stock holding, efficient operations and rapid response to changes in the environment. In addition, centralised management functions shared between Smiths Plastics and Automouldhave effected significant overhead cost savings. These factors result in competitive advantages, which have positioned Smiths Plastics and Automould as key suppliers to the automotive OEMs in South Africa.
